A Touch Of History: Diving Into Moroccan Rugs Origins

Moroccan rugs are highly revered in the interior design landscape, as nothing quite comes close to the craftsmanship they possess. Unfortunately, most people remain unaware of their origin, especially since most people assume that they only come from the modern landscape of Morocco. Many people understand the intricacy of each design, but it’s important to understand that the tradition of rug creation dates back centuries. 

The native Moroccan people found it necessary to create rugs, particularly due to the climate of the region. Harsh and unforgiving, they’ve decided to protect themselves from the elements with rugs with thick and heavy materials. From the snowy mountains down to the hottest desserts, they’ve created rugs that withstand simply anything. 

In time, these rugs eventually developed into other functional uses, such as sleeping mats, bed covers, decorations, and even burial shrouds. In an effort to pay homage to the beautiful history of Moroccan rugs, we’ve curated this quick glimpse of the past:

The True Function Of Moroccan Rugs—As Dictated By History

Although Moroccan rugs were definitely made locally, their designs were mostly inspired by African art. It can especially be difficult to pinpoint, especially since these rugs do not fir the stereotypical art from Africa. 

Much like what we know, however, Moroccan rugs come with rectangular and geometric shapes, believed to ward off negative spirits and powers. Rug creators believe that their pieces can provide beyond just physical comfort—it serves as a metaphysical protection. 

Most designs also come from traditional and ancient techniques, even ones we see on the market today. They are passed down from weaver to weaver, with patterns intimately depicting their familial life, thereby making each piece unique. However, Morocco is a vast land—and what works for one tribe does not work for another, which is why these rugs we now know today come with distinctive personalities.

In the mountain regions, these carpets also served as blankets. Berber families survived harsh winters thanks to these carefully woven rugs, adorned with talismanic compositions that was also believed to support fertility. Berber designs are also known for the asymmetrical designs, which is a testament to their mystical beliefs imbued within their rugs. These designs are also believed to mimic the landscapes, including the winding and folds of the Alps.

Other tribes, on the other hand, believed that rugs were for meditative purposes, which gave way to the artistic freedom of simply choosing what they wish to create. These become their unique way of expressing their culture and identities, in carefully chosen materials that last for centuries.

Today, Moroccan rugs made by the tribes of the past are highly in demand, especially considering the amount of passion, culture, and history they come with. They’re also highly flexible in terms of decorative functions, and can still be used in a variety of ways—true to what they have been created for.
