Who Is The Designer Of The Year From Maison Et Objet 2023

Maison Et Objet 2023 | Designer Of The Year

Raphael Navot, the selected winner by Maison et Objet, was born in Jerusalem, Israel, in the year 1977. He moved to Paris and started studying interior architecture and design after earning a Bachelor’s degree in conceptual design from Design Academy Eindhoven in 2003. He has a wide variety of multidisciplinary projects in his portfolio, showcasing French craftsmanship and creativity in everything from bespoke and commercial product design to examples of hospitality interiors.

Raphael Navot‘s first known project to have been completed was Silencio. Looking back, he can see that local crafts were already being employed, together with natural resources. The Hotel National des Arts et Métiers, on the other hand, symbolizes his first real conceptual breakthrough because it incorporates so many parts of what he has been doing up to this point.

He had complete independence from a very daring and generous owner, so it was very fair for him to draw the visitor’s attention back to what I then referred to as The Natural Future. He had ample of time, a huge crew, and a sizable budget—all characteristics that are uncommon and valuable for any type of structure.

He partnered with David Lynch to create the Parisian nightclub Silencio (2011), Oscar Ono with whom he created a highly technical line of end-grain flooring (2016), and Roche Bobois with whom he created 12 families of furniture, including couches, tables, rugs, and lamps (2018). He takes pride in using noble materials and a philosophical approach on every project he takes on.

He enjoys the thought of working with companies because he can tap into a narrative, but he must first comprehend and support their narrative. The fact that Roche Bobois is a French company that operates abroad and manufactures in Europe using premium natural resources caught his attention. Due of their fantastic connections with so many manufacturers and craftspeople, working with them was a real pleasure. Working on a project of this size was incredibly interesting since manufacturing has very different possibilities than working with a gallery.

“I am not sure there is a visual manner that can describe my aesthetics, although all the projects derive from similar values and hopefully establish a uniform style. Natural materials and traditional craft are always present, often bespoke for each project and with certain attributes of organic forms. I often opt to achieve an experience that is somewhat timeless. Timelessness for me is a non-decorative quality that does not refer to trends or certain motives that are associated with a specific period. I often think that good interiors seem as if they have always been there.”
