This prize is given to a designer who has distinguished themselves internationally in the disciplines of design and decoration. Maison et Objet Paris: Meet The Designer Of The Year
@ Silencio, Raphael Navot and David Lynch

Raphael Navot collaborated with David Lynch on the Parisian nightclub Silencio (2011) and Oscar Ono (2016) on a highly technical line of end-grain flooring, as well as designing 12 families of furniture for Roche Bobois, including couches, tables, rugs, and lamps (2018). However, his work at the Hôtel National des Arts et Métiers in 2017 may have been his most notable achievement.

Hotel National Des Arts Et Métiers, Paris @ Raphael Navot

Silencio, a joint effort between David Lynch and I, was the first project I am known to have worked on. When I look back, I can see that natural materials were used and that local crafts were already being included. However, in terms of concepts, Hotel National des Arts et Métiers represents my first true breakthrough because it covers so many facets of what I have continued to do up until this point. It was absolutely reasonable for me to redirect the guest’s attention back to what I then referred to as The Natural Future because I had complete independence from a very bold and liberal owner. We had a sizable staff, a sizable budget, and plenty of time—all things that are rare and valuable for any kind of building.

“I am not in the habit of looking at design magazines or following trends so I’m not necessarily aware of exactly what is ‘out there’, but I do research a lot before each project, especially about psychology and natural sciences as I believe that these are the fields that eventually affect and inspire design as much as they affect architecture and music. The natural world is incredibly rich and has surpassed any imagined design possible”.
